Under the Families First Coronavirus Response Act of 2020, families that qualify for free or reduced price meals at school may be eligible for a new one-time Pandemic Electronic Benefits Transfer (P-EBT) of up to $302 per child (Pre-Kindergarten – Grade 12) to help cover the cost of meals students have eaten at home on days that schools have been closed. Students can receive P-EBT benefits even if they have been or continue to receive meals provided by the school district during the school closure. If your child was not previously eligible for free or reduced price meals, but you have now lost income, you may be eligible to receive P-EBT benefits (review the P-EBT Eligibility Criteria document below). The benefit is placed on an Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) card families use to buy food. If you received Food Stamp (SNAP) benefits in March, do not apply for these new/additional benefits. The full $302 will automatically be loaded to your existing EBT card. If you did not receive Food Stamp (SNAP) benefits in March, you must apply for this benefit by June 30, 2020 (see below). The most efficient way to apply is to submit your application online at EmergencyMealSurvey.com/MO. You will also likely experience a faster approval process. If you’re not able to apply online, you can follow the link below to the paper application. The fillable PDF document can then be emailed or mailed to the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE). You will find complete instructions and additional details in the letter to families below. Please review these important documents carefully: • P-EBT Letter to Families • P-EBT Eligibility Criteria • P-EBT Online Application • P-EBT Paper Application (hard copy to fill out and email or mail to DESE if you’re not able to submit the application online) • P-EBT Frequently Asked Questions To request a paper application be mailed to you, please contact our Food and Nutrition Services office at 417-267-2850 x 2100. Please do not send completed applications to your school; see the letter to families above for application submission information. The Department of Social Services (DSS) will send families a letter indicating they are approved or denied. If you have questions on how to apply for the P-EBT benefit, contact DSS through the online chat feature at mydss.mo.gov or call 855-373-4636. For more information on the EBT card, visit: mydss.mo.gov/food-assistance/ebt.

I have had several questions about practices for sports and use of facilities for our buildings. We are hoping to be able to use them beginning May 18th if everything is good and the Health Departments give us the ok. The following letter from MSHSAA outlines that we cannot begin to use our facilities until the end of the school year which would have been May 15. I am hoping coaches etc can open the following week if everything is cleared by health departments at that time. Thanks Brent Offerdahl High School Principal Athletic Director Pleasant Hope R-6 MSHSAA Member Schools Superintendent, Principal, and Athletic Director; We continue to get questions about what can occur for sports and activities at your school, especially with the state reopening for some businesses on May 4, 2020. Here are some things you need to be aware of, the Governor stated, "Even though the state is reopening, schools must remain closed to in person instruction through the remainder of this school year." Therefore, in accordance with what we have put out in the last couple weeks, you cannot use your buildings or facilities for open gyms, open fields, or any kind of contact while your school year is in session. The spring sports and activities seasons were canceled due to the Governor shutting down in person classes and going to remote learning; therefore, all contact in person with students for sports and activities specific instruction, conditioning, or any other school sports settings are not allowed at this time. 1. 1. Summer contact cannot occur until your school year ends, or the Friday of Memorial Day Weekend, May 23, 2020. 2. 2. Your local, state, and national governments must clear or remove social distancing requirements to allow you to have contact with students. Currently, people are instructed to have 6 feet between them, and no more than 10 people in a gathering. 3. 3. No contact should occur at any school without the approval of the superintendent of schools once the previous items are met. Here are the press releases from DESE and Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services where these interpretations are based on. DESE Release, April 9th - To reiterate what the Governor shared, school buildings will remain closed for the rest of the school year…but school services should continue through the last day of school in each school district, as pre-established by the school calendar approved by their local board of education. Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services P.O. Parson Governor April 27, 2020 The Director of the Department of Health and Senior Services, finding it necessary to protect public health and prevent the further spread of COVID-19, pursuant to the authority granted under section 192.020, RSMo, and 19 CSR 20-20.040, hereby order the following: 2. In accordance with the guidelines from the President and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), every person and business in the State of Missouri shall abide by social distancing requirements, including maintaining six feet (6’) of space between individuals. This provision shall not apply to family members or individuals performing job duties that require contact with other people closer than six feet (6’). Individuals performing job duties that require contact with other people closer than six feet (6’) should take enhanced precautionary measures to mitigate the risks of contracting or spreading COVID-19. This provision shall apply in all situations, including, but not limited to, when customers are standing in line or individuals are using shared indoor or outdoor spaces. 5. In accordance with the guidelines from the President and the CDC, schools shall remain closed for the remainder of the 2019-2020 academic school year. At the discretion of the school district, nothing in this Order shall prohibit school teachers, school staff, students, and parents from reentering school buildings in order to work, retrieve personal belongings, or return school property as long as limitations on social distancing are properly adhered to. Summer school may proceed under guidelines set forth by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. Notwithstanding section 2 of this Order, nothing in this Order shall prohibit daycares, child care providers, or schools from providing child care in accordance with CDC guidelines. Further, this Order does not prohibit schools from providing Food and Nutritional Services for those children that qualify. www.mshsaa.org • 573 875-4880 1 North Keene St. • Columbia, MO 65201

Ms. Koss (ALL CLASSES) All grades have been updated for my classes. I unfortunately received many papers without names on them so I am encouraging everyone to check their grades. If you see something missing from the grade book that you completed you need to send me an email with the name of the assignment and the due date. If you turned in something "late" online or without a name on the assignment, it is not in the grade book. Please take a few minutes to make sure you are not missing anything!

MESSAGE FROM THE MISSOURI STATE HIGH SCHOOL ACTIVITIES ASSOCIATION REGARDING SUMMER BY-LAWS MSHSAA Board Approves Changes to Summer By-Laws Decision opens door for possibilities to summer time contests Columbia, Mo.- The Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) Board of Directors voted to grant relief of portions of the MSHSAA By-Laws that include summer limits on contact between coaches and student-athletes, at its April meeting on Thursday, April 16th. Dependent upon approval from local and state health officials, the MSHSAA Board voted to make the summertime dead period and the summer limits on contact optional for the summer of 2020. MSHSAA By-Law 1.5 requires member schools to establish a period of nine consecutive days beginning on a Saturday and lasting to the second following Sunday, in which no contact takes place between school coaches/directors of MSHSAA-sponsored activities and students enrolled in the member school, or who will be enrolled in the member school during the next school year. With Thursday’s decision, a school may choose to comply with this “dead period” or to allow teams to hold activities. This decision also relieves portions of By-Law 3.15.3 and 3.15.4, which limits teams to 20 days of contact during the summer. Member schools may allow teams to have more than 20 days of contact in which any coaching or instruction in the skills and techniques of any sport takes place. “The abrupt changes that took place to our normal system of education this spring, have our schools pleading for access to students this summer,” said MSHSAA Executive Director Dr. Kerwin Urhahn. “The membership asked about what possible flexibility and modifications to by-law restrictions that could be offered. If there is no local, state, or national clearance for safe contact with students, then any allowances dealing with summer will be moot. But, in an effort to be prepared for what we hope is possible, this action was taken to grant some relief for the member schools.” In other action, the Board of Directors voted to allow seniors to be viewed as enrolled students through the summer, which allows them to represent their high schools in summertime interscholastic competition. This relief of By-Law 3.15 is designed for this summer only. “Hopefully, this will allow schools to play contests against other schools to provide closure and recognition for students and allow teams and kids to play together this summer,” said Urhahn. At this point, no action was taken to alter any other sections of By-Law 3.15, or the fall no contact period (3.15.1.b) that is scheduled to take place between August 3, 2020 and August 9, 2020. All summertime activities remain optional for students, attendance or participation could not be required. “The first thing that needs to be clearly understood is that all decisions about anything summer-related – be it contact, access, practice, games, conditioning, etc. - must first be approved, cleared and deemed safe by the CDC, State and Local Health Departments, the Governor, and local Mayors” Urhahn concluded. “The end of social distancing and ‘safe at home’ is still not clearly visible yet, and summer activities may not be possible due to the covid-19 pandemic and its own timeline.”

From Mr. Lankford: Good morning, I wanted to make you aware of a couple of things that may interest you. The first is there will be a virtual college fair held April 20-23. If you attend you will need to sign up for each session you are interested in. This is a national fair so several sessions may not be of interest to you. There are several that are Missouri and/or midwest specific and several that discuss topics like admissions, money, choosing a college that fits, etc. If you have questions about the college admissions process I encourage you to attend it. The link for this fair is : https://www.strivescan.com/virtual/ The second item is, ACT is in the process of making the test more convenient to take. They are offering more summer dates and are working on the ability for you to take the test remotely at home. This function will not be available until sometime in late fall/early winter 2020. I have attached a press release to google classroom from ACT explaining these changes. Please reach out to me if you need something. Miss you all!

Seniors and Senior Parents as well as the Pleasant Hope Community, In the midst of all that is going on in our world, I have worked with many others in gathering advice, talking with parents, our staff, and administration in developing a plan for a graduation ceremony. With the governor cancelling all school classes and activities for the remainder of the school year, we have come up with a plan for after school is out. We have made the decision to hold the ceremony on June 6th, 2020 at 10:00am. We are putting together a plan to hold the ceremony on the football field to allow for parents and their senior child to be a part of the ceremony so we can recognize all graduates in front of their classmates and parents while still allowing for guidelines of social distancing if needed at that time. This will allow us to have all speakers still speak at graduation, award scholarship winners and have all graduates be able to accept a diploma in front of their classmates and parents. The plan would be for the graduates to be spaced out on the football field, to have a sound system, podium, etc. up front to award diplomas at the given time and then have parents be able to space out on the football field and bleachers during the ceremony. If all of the guidelines for gatherings of less than 10 feet goes away prior to the June 6th date, we will plan to have a more formal ceremony like we have had in the past that will possibly be in the middle school gymnasium. In the result of inclement weather and restrictions still in place, the decision has been made to have graduates still be present and be spaced out in the gymnasium possibly. We will do our best to live stream the event and still allow for graduates to get a diploma as well as give speeches and recognize scholarships etc. I would love for all of the COVID-19 restrictions to go away and we can have a more formal, normal ceremony, but we felt it best to put together a somewhat concrete plan and date at this time for all seniors to be able to make plans for a graduation date and ceremony. Thanks to everyone for their willingness to help out in these difficult times and we will get through this and we will recognize the Amazing Class of 2020!!!! As the COVID-19 Pandemic progresses we will update as needed on a continual basis leading up to the June 6th graduation date. Thanks, Brent Offerdahl High School Principal Pleasant Hope R-6

PROM and GRADUATION UPDATE.... As a result of the Coronavirus restrictions being placed upon facilities etc. from the CDC we have had to make the unfortunate decision to cancel Prom as it was to be scheduled on April 25th at the Pythian Castle in Springfield. We have been in contact with the Pythian Castle and will have a chance to possibly schedule at a later date for an event if the all clear is ever given for us to find another date for a Prom type event. Graduation is scheduled for May 8th. We would love to still make that date work in some fashion but we are going to be posting alternative plans by next week if there is not a safe environment for us to hold a graduation type ceremony on May 8th. I will be posting an alternative plan next week on graduation for when and if we end up ha omg to postpone the current May 8th Graduation date. Please stay safe and stay healthy!! Chris Lankford
From Mr. Lankford: Students, if you are wanting to take an online dual credit class for fall 2020 you will need to complete the registration form for the college you are taking the credit through before classes start in fall of 2020. Previously our school year started a week or two before the registration deadline but this year public schools are starting after the registration deadline. If you wait until we come to school to register it will be too late. In google classrooms class of 2021 and 2022 I have provided instructions on how to sign up for online dual credit classes through OTC. The registration process this year is completely online, there will be no registration forms to fill out and return to me. I have also attached the online dual credit class descriptions in google classroom. OTC has a priority deadline of April 14th. The absolute final deadline is August 19th 2020, the later you wait the greater a chance that the class you want may be full. I will provide instructions on how to enroll for classes through MSSU, Evangel, and Drury in a separate post later. Students if you are not a member of your graduating class google classroom I encourage you to join. Below I are the class codes, parents you are welcome to join as well. 2020: r5o5jdm 2021: 2fzgtl7 2022: sdsbak7 2023: 7c7hzmj

From Mr. Lankford: Good morning seniors, there has been another update to A+ that may make you eligible if you were not previously. This change is in regard to the math requirement. This change is only for the 2020 seniors and does not apply to any other class. The Algebra I EOC requirement is waived for all 2020 high school seniors, including those who have already taken the exam but did not meet the requirement as well as those who have not yet taken the exam. Waiver of this requirement also exempts the 2020 seniors from having to meet the ACT math subscore/high school GPA alternative. Just to recap from my previous post, other changes include: 25 hours of tutoring by the end of this semester. 2.5 Cumulative GPA or higher by the end of this semester or the end of the fall 2019 semester. All other requirements remain the same. Please contact me at clankford@phr6.org if you would like to participate in A+ but did not because you were not eligible due to of one of the requirements listed above.

Message From MSHSAA regarding Spring Sports, Activities, and Practices MSHSAA Member Schools Superintendents, Principals, Athletic Directors, Coaches, and Officials; The MSHSAA Office has received several inquiries about spring sports and scholar bowl continuing this year. At this time, we are on hold for making a decision until we know more what the schools are going to do based upon their local health department, recommendations from the CDC, and state government. We are interscholastic activities and sports; therefore, if schools do not return to session this school year, then we cannot have a spring season. Right now there is too much unknown to make any decisions or adjustments, until we are later into April to see what happens with schools. Once the decisions have been made regarding education for the remainder of the year, we will determine our path. We are the tail, not the dog in this situation. MSHSAA is committed to the safety of our student-participants and the health of our school communities. Accordingly, in response to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommendations regarding public gatherings, schools are reminded that it is not prudent for any number of students to gather for workouts, regardless of how those students gather or whether any MSHSAA rules are broken by said gathering. While schools are closed due to the COVID-19, teams are not allowed to practice or participate in competitions. This includes informal/player-led practices or any type of instructional session. National, state, and local governmental leaders are clear: To help our country slow the spread of this pandemic, the best thing society can do is limit its interaction with one another. So, despite how difficult this may be, the MSHSAA office strongly recommends students, parents, coaches, and non-school coaches/trainers follow this advice. Doing so could ultimately end up salvaging the spring sports season.

FROM THE DESK OF COACH TURNER Good evening Physical and Chemical Science students, I want to adjust the goal for your USA test prep from 90 to 70 percent. I cannot change this assessment, but moving forward I will place a bit lower expectations. Try twice to get the highest score possible, looking up answers as much as you can. I do not want you to spend hours retaking the tests, your honest effort twice should suffice.

At PHRS, the boys in the Mumford classroom worked hard to complete a Rube Goldberg machine to complete their Physical Science unit on Work and Machines. The boys designed and created a ramp which a hot wheels car rolls down, knocking into a set of dominoes. The end of the dominoes then bumps into a ball that rolls down yet another ramp and through a tunnel and into another line of dominoes. The dominoes knocked down a set of towers, the last attached to a string. The string is fixed on a pulley system which then raises a sign designed by a member of the group , which reads "Thank you for watching!" This project not only demonstrated student understanding, but also gave them an opportunity for hands on learning and creating. This was also a great way to instill a strong sense of hard work, success, and team building in individuals who haven't had many opportunities do so in the past. It was a success!

The PHRS science classes have been focused on learning! Our Biology 1 students have made good progress using USA Test Prep; scores have improved since the beginning of the year. Biology this year has focused more on a local scale, trying to relate subjects to Missouri or the Ozark area as much as possible. We just went over cells and cell structure and are moving into ATP & Energy cycles. Junior High Science has recently created mock-up Rube Goldberg machines and we plan to pick one to build in class. Earth Science continues to move forward, and is a senior led class that is focused on graduation. We try to relate Earth Science topics to global and current events. Physical Science students have conquered the Periodic Table and just finished up acids and bases. They had a couple small labs involving pH testing and practiced using indicator strips. They are heading into simple machines and are excited about the Rube Goldberg machine, planning to outdo the upper-classman. STEM has been having a great time! First they learned about scale drawing and have since moved from scaling simple objects to objects as large as houses. They have gone though basics of architecture and have developed detailed "tiny house" models complete with basic layouts and floor-plans. We are moving into our final project for the semester which will be a full size corner wall section framed and wired complete with wall outlets and lighting!

At the Ranch School, the Mumford classroom has been working toward the daily goal to remain on task, and consequence free both individually and as a class. Each student has a sticker chart and has the opportunity to earn a sticker each day for displaying exemplary positive behavior. Each week, students who have 3 out of 4 days task-free earn a fun, small prize. Negative behaviors have decreased immensely from the beginning of the school year which is, in part, credited to this system! Three out of nine students have received a large monthly prize of choice for remaining task free two months in a row and recently, four out of nine have received the monthly reward! After reaping the benefits of earning these rewards, more students are eager to follow Ranch and classroom rules. Mumford students' learning and productivity has consequently increased, improving grades in the process. Mumford class has also been getting into the fall and Halloween spirit by decorating the classroom as assignments are completed, which includes making their own Jack-O-Lanterns.

As the first quarter winds down, Mrs. Allen's Film and Literature class has finished up their first unit. They began by reading the book "Tex," by S.E. Hinton, taking chapter quizzes throughout, and a final test afterward. Next, they watched the movie in class, which they loved! Finally, each student wrote a 5-paragraph literary essay as their final grade for the quarter. All of the boys in class really enjoyed this book, and were motivated to do their best!!
